Radiocoms Systems Ltd awarded Manx Utilities contract

October 2019: Radiocoms to support utilities company Motorola Solutions MOTOTRBO and WAVE radio system

Radiocoms has been awarded a three year support and maintenance contract by Manx Utilities for their comprehensive Motorola Solutions MOTOTRBO Linked Capacity Plus System, which is integrated with, WAVE 5000 and TRBOnet Plus.

In addition to high quality voice communications, employees can use text messaging to share information when voice communication is inconvenient. The system was implemented as a direct replacement for an obsolete analogue FM system and allowed the introduction of privacy measures including encryption.

The system provides focused, on-site, communications at Manx Utilities’ electricity generation and gas pressure reduction sites. The move to UHF digital from VHF analogue now guarantees solid coverage in all locations.

As staff safety is paramount, Manx Utilities have placed emphasis on lone worker and man-down protection. GPS tracking for outdoor staff and iBeacons* for indoors allow the control room to quickly locate team members in difficulty, whilst the transmit interrupt prioritises important communication exactly when it is needed, and emergency alerts enable workers to send notifications to Manx Utilities’ 24-hour control room. By utilising the GeoFencing features of TRBOnet Plus, lone worker policies can be implemented automatically when staff enter unmanned sites out of hours.

Wave5000 brings secure access to the radio system from a mobile device running the Wave app or from a desktop PC. This allows managers and engineers to participate in the network when an incident occurs, irrespective of their location. This is particularly useful out of hours when people are out of range of the radio system or do not have a radio with them.

The award further strengthens Radiocoms’ partner presence within the utilities vertical, highlighting their ability to support secure integrated radio communication systems. By utilising solutions of this nature, the engineering and operations teams stay in constant contact, which is a necessity for the successful operation of the plant.
