iBeacons For Two Way Radio Systems
& Smartphone Apps
iBeacons are small, battery-operated units broadcast their unique identifier over Bluetooth. For example, a radio continually listens for the iBeacons, and periodically sends a report over the MOTOTRBO™ data channel to the application.
iBeacons are a class of Bluetooth low energy (BLE) devices that broadcast their identifier to nearby portable electronic devices. The coverage area of the iBeacons can be within the range of 1 to 80 meters; there is even a 200m range device and they can be installed both indoors and outdoors. The number of the beacons installed determines the amount of area covered and the overall accuracy – The more beacons the radio reports, the more accurate the location fix will be.
How do iBeacons operate with a two way radio system, smartphone or a tablet?
The technology enables Bluetooth enabled two-way radios, smartphones, tablets and other devices to perform actions when near an iBeacon. The identifier and several bytes sent with it can be used to determine the device’s physical location, track customers, or trigger a location-based action on the device such as a check-in on social media or a push notification. Staff and assets can be located with this invisible geofencing technology, so you can ensure your employees or assets are in the right place at the right time.
The two-way radio continually listens for the iBeacons, and periodically sends a report over the data channel to the application. The application can trigger a buzzer in a beacon to find a lost item or trigger a notification on an application if an item (or person) is going out of range.
