Organisations today are faced with the challenge of finding the most effective communication tools for their employees in an increasingly fast-paced and collaborative environment. With employees expecting faster technology and seamless collaboration, organisations often find themselves using a variety of incompatible devices and apps.
In this month’s ask the expert, we had a conversation with Mike Wiltshire from Airsys.Cloud delving into the changing world of Group Communications as a Service (GCaaS) , debunking common misconceptions about BBPTT and his perspective on upcoming trends in the industry. And, of course, we couldn’t forget to ask him about his all-important desert island essentials.
Can you tell us about Airsys.Cloud & the core values of the organisation?
Airsys.Cloud is a GCaaS (Group Communications as a Service) platform that allows us to provide solutions to our customers problems. As much as 80% of the UK workforce operate away from a desk and potentially at risk, and/or work alone. Our platform instantly Connects, Protects and Informs deskless workers and updates business operations in real time. This provides organisations with instant Voice, Video and document/image communication between internal and external work groups; a safeguarding tool that delivers instant information about any situation their members of staff might find themselves in, and the correct information for rapid response wherever they are. As well as this it provides an operational tool to ensure day to day tasks are carried out and reported in real time.
The GCaaS arm of the Airsys business is all about a consultative approach to our partners and their customers, we listen to both parties and look for ways to tailor a solution to fit and often exceed the requirements of an end user.
How is Airsys.Cloud different to its main competitors?
Our platform is feature rich and inherently flexible allowing us to tailor our many deployments down to the individual requirements. While the platform is at the heart of our solutions, there are many facets to what we do and it is our role to provide a complete end to end product, this includes the hardware, the software, and indeed the connectivity. It is our innovative approach with new solutions that makes us stand out from the competitors.
What are the most common mis-conceptions about BBPTT devices?
We have moved on from the PTT abbreviation as the platform is so capable, defining it as PTT is almost belittling what this solution actually does, this is why we coin the phrase GCaaS. The devices that are used in this space are commonly referred to as radios, in actual fact they are smart devices which means they are far more versatile and can be used for a variety of business functions outside of the platform we provide. A lot of these devices have radio type features such as PTT, SOS, channel change buttons in a more ruggedised body, however with them you can answer an e-mail and PTT to your various teams at the same time and without the need for multiple devices.
Have you noticed any key trends or changes within the BBPTT and GCaaS industry in recent years? And what changes do you see coming over the next 5-10 years?
The evolution of the product has been fast as tends to be the case in the tech space, the supporting elements of the complete product have also evolved such as the connectivity options both in terms of Mobile Data services but also the options for extending and boosting coverage in known bad areas, we have a number of solutions available from Private LTE Networks, to WiFi coverage boosters. In addition, increased functionality such as emergency messaging and integration with business systems as well as a convergence of CCTV, access control and GCaaS capabilities.
In the next 5-10 years we see the demand for this technology growing exponentially, the drive for mission critical networks, devices, eco systems and integration in this area is increasing and this is almost certainly the way of the future.
What future practices do you see taking place for sustainability in the communications industry?
Minimising electronic waste with device consolidation will play a huge factor in the future of our workforce, security officers with 5 devices for a single shift will be a thing of the past, this will hugely contribute to the environmental impact of this technology. Conservation of resources and reduction in carbon footprint is another, by streamlining communication and coordination processes, push to talk technology can help organisations better allocate and conserve valuable resources, such as time, materials, and manpower.
Tell us a bit about yourself personally and your background before Airsys.Cloud
I had my own business for 10 years in distribution with a completely different product but was (like GCaaS) a disrupter in the market, so while the industries are completely separate I was able to draw an awful lot of parallels between the 2 business. I closed the doors to my business in 2017 and went back to the corporate world working for a big player in the tech industry as a Head of Customer Relations, ultimately I wanted to get back into new product sales and marketing and the Airsys opportunity came knocking, I saw the huge potential of the product and was, and continue to be excited about where we are heading. Outside of work I am a husband, father of 2 boys (unpaid work), bit of a sports nut, love to travel and meet new people and share experiences with those most important to me.
What is the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of your job?
As with any new product the challenge is driving the awareness, and to do this we need to work with forward thinking partners such as Radiocoms that have the same vision as we do and appreciate the platform we have and how best to utilise it. The other key challenge for us is that we see a need for this in almost every business, particularly post pandemic, so industry focus is a challenge for us and one we have a great strategy for moving forward. The things that excite me in the business are absolutely when we get a new customer with one of our partners and seeing the value that the solution brings, as with any new tech there are challenges but our collaborative and consultative approach is what really makes it great fun and very rewarding.
And finally, You’re stranded on a desert island. What three things would you bring with you?
No Idea….. Sky Sports, Golf Clubs (and balls), a whole load of doughnuts!
