Why do I need Two Way Radio Licence?
If you are utilising or plan to utilise a two way radio system that does not operate on PMR446 licence free frequencies (446.0 – 446.1 MHz) you will be required to purchase an OFCOM business radio licence.
There are many variations of OFCOM business radio site licences and it can be confusing to know which one to choose, it all depends on your radio equipment and location. Radiocoms Systems Ltd can guide you through your application or apply for it on your behalf. By managing your OFCOM spectrum licencing for you we will ensure a revoke notice is never issued.
What are the OFCOM Radio Licence options?
|Licence Type||Cost||Licence Description|
|Simple UK Light||The licence fee is £75.00 for five years||This licence authorises hand portable or mobile radio equipment to be programmed with a set of fifteen frequencies spread across four business radio UHF or VHF frequency bands. You can utilise a repeater/base station on this type of radio licence.|
|Simple Site Light||The licence fee is £75.00 for five years||On this radio licence you can operate hand portables, paging systems and mobile radios operating within an area of typically 1 kilometre or less using a base station/repeater and antenna. Licensees have access to a range of frequencies however, they must self-coordinate with other simple site light licensees.|
|Technically Assigned||Typically range from £75.00 to £1480.00 for a single channel assignment||A flexible OFCOM radio licence which allows for the use on a wide variation of business radio equipment which is typically recommended for larger radio systems or where there is heavy use of radio traffic within that area.|
This is a flexible licence that authorises the use of a wide variety of business radio equipment. Licensees can choose from a wide range of frequencies across all UHF and VHF Radio bands and a wide range of coverage areas, from very small (e.g. in-building coverage) to very large (e.g. a county). Licence fees are calculated on the basis of several factors including the size of the coverage area and the popularity of the frequency band.
|Area Defined||POA||Area Defined licences give customers exclusive use of a frequency across either a 50km2 grid square, a country, or the whole of the UK. Licence fees are calculated using a combination of frequency width, frequency range and region covered.|
As an example, a duplex 12.5kHz frequency between 450 and 470MHz to be used across the UK would cost £9,900. A duplex 12.5kHz frequency between 68 and 80MHz to be used across the UK would cost £3,300. Availability of UK-wide channels is extremely limited above 165MHz, so if wish to purchase an Area Defined licence you should check spectrum availability with us first.
