Meet Ash, Radiocoms Senior Engineer

What is your role at Radiocoms?

I manage the operations for airport related works in the South. I’ve been in the telecoms industry for about 15 years now, started as a junior tech and worked my way up. These days I’m responsible for managing a team who keep all the critical communications infrastructure running smoothly across a number of major airports.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Being at the airport, no day is the same –  new comms for an airline, fault finding for ground-to-air radios, ensuring there is connectivity for vehicles communicating with the tower to providing hearing protection for pushback tugs.

As airports expand, we are always looking at ways we can ensure that the appropriate level of coverage is present in new areas. It’s all about helping safeguard teams and create better situational awareness for safety.

What projects are you currently working on?

It has been a busy year with technology expansion for our customers, ‘bringing together’ has been a key theme, instead of having fragmented systems with multiple technologies.

One of our biggest airline customers has been upgrading their VHF system bringing in Zetron, with over 100 terminals to unify all their comms, and our team have been doing an amazing job to support this transition.

Also looking at starting telematics – tracking ground support equipment, monitoring performance, and predictive maintenance. This project is particularly interesting because it will tie into the existing radio infrastructure we’ve already got in place which gives operations much better visibility into what’s happening on the ground.

We are also working on a proof of concept to streamline a PoC solution with current DMR systems in place for a few of our customers, as I mentioned no day at the airport is the same!

What’s your ideal day off?

My ideal day off would be spending time with the family, going on holiday to somewhere warm by a pool, little one splashing about, good food and if possible, no calls coming in. Simple pleasures, really.
