How to secure a construction site

Every day, construction companies across the UK lose thousands of pounds to theft, vandalism, and liability claims losses that are entirely preventable with proper security measures. The Health and Safety Executive continues to report incidents involving unauthorised access to construction zones, highlighting the ongoing challenges the industry faces.

So, what are the most effective ways to protect your site? Radiocoms Judith Eastham discusses what works in practice.

Construction site security measures

Securing a site begins before works commence. Once the site’s perimeter has been confirmed, construction sites must erect and maintain boundary fencing. HSE recommends a two-metre-high boundary fence or hoarding.

The principal contractor must set access control parameters stipulating who has access and under what circumstances they may enter a site. Certain site visitors may have authorisation, but should still be accompanied to ensure their safety.

UK police have published detailed technical specifications for physical barriers and lighting along with their advice on site security. Outside the basics, such as securing equipment when they are not in use, adding anti-climb measures for fencing, and briefing all personnel on security measures, the following are some elements you may implement:

Security lighting

Install security lighting at well-chosen locations around the site, as dark spaces provide intruders with places to hide. Consider using lighting with motion sensors at sensitive areas where intruders may gain access, as well as around storage areas that may attract thieves.

Employ security guards

Station security guards at site entrances and establish patrol routines, particularly after construction crews have finished work for the day. Ensure that they are able to communicate at the touch of a button, and equip them with panic buttons and man-down alerts that will quickly alert supervisors if something is amiss.

Set up security cameras

Security cameras act as a deterrent, and they can be equipped with software that alerts personnel when something unusual appears to be happening. This enables cost-effective site monitoring and rapid response. Avigilon video, cloud and CCTV access control solutions from Motorola Solutions are powered by advanced AI and video analytics to give you the right information at the right time so that you can act decisively against any security threats on the construction site.

Alarm systems

Conduct a thorough risk assessment to determine where alarms should be installed and ensure that there are personnel who are ready to respond quickly if alarm systems are activated. Alarm systems are particularly effective when coupled with security cameras that allow personnel to view the affected area. This can also be controlled through TRBOnet connected to your CCTV and radio system.

Access control measures and systems

Apart from old-fashioned sign-in systems and wearable access cards, sensitive sites can be protected with biometric access control systems. Key fobs are occasionally used, but can present a risk if lost or stolen.

Gate-controlled two-way radio systems combine remote access control with long-range, two-way voice communication. These systems typically use radio callboxes at gates or access points, and portable or base station radios for communication with personnel. They offer a secure and efficient way to manage access and communication, especially in situations where trenching for wired systems is not feasible.

Communication systems

Employees who identify construction site security concerns should never be unsupported. Reliable two-way radio communication is a construction site essential, and this applies to both operations and round-the-clock site security. BBPTT Push-To-Talk two-way radios with lone worker alarm and man-down features can be used on the construction site to ensure a quick response to any security threats to personnel.

Conduct frequent security audits

Just as you should frequently reassess workplace safety, security will be a key consideration. Sites change over time, and the aim is to remain one step ahead, always taking reasonable measures to ensure employee compliance and prevent intrusion. Since security equipment operates in harsh environments, be sure to confirm that all security systems are in working order.

Advanced technology in construction site security

The rise of new technologies has made it possible to enhance construction site security while reducing employee risks. For example, AI-powered surveillance cameras do not rely on continual in-person monitoring, but can be trained to alert personnel to suspicious activity. It can even track the movement of materials around a site if desired.

Advanced surveillance cameras are able to record clear footage, even in poor light, and they can be linked to alarm systems, including voice-warning recordings or live voice broadcasts. Drone monitoring can reduce security personnel’s exposure to the risks they may encounter when encountering intruders, and biometric access control can record comings and goings while excluding unauthorised persons.

Two-way radio technology has advanced, too, and may include key features like noise cancellation, fall alerts and secure message encryption. When coordination and security matter, two-way radios are always in evidence.
