Background

As a market leading financial corporation operating in over 75 countries, team communications is imperative.
Being united is a key value for this organisation and therefore when they were opening their newly built corporate offices in Birmingham, they turned to Radiocoms a trusted partner since 2007, to design a unified, and scalable communications solution to support team communications.
To serve as their in-house communication system the client required a solution that would create a connection for various user groups over multiple floors including basement areas.
Due to historical challenges posed around capacity and the lack of radio spectrum available from Ofcom in London (which hampered the desired and required additional channel capacity) the client was naturally keen to explore other technologies for its Birmingham operation which would mitigate any potential lack of spectrum and delays in deployment.
To solve this problem Radiocoms suggested utilising both traditional DMR radio technology of which they are well accustomed to as well as introducing Motorola Solutions broadband push to talk WAVE PTX to create a hybrid system across their three sites.
Following the success of a hands-on demonstration, the organisation opted for a Hybrid solution of a MOTOTRBO linked capacity plus system for use amongst its traditional users such as security and maintenance teams and a WAVE PTX BBPTT solution for its non-traditional users for example, reception, AV support teams and Front of House crew.
WAVE PTX enables PTT communications over WIFI and 3G/4G cellular networks, automatically switching to ensure the best signal and ensuring coverage in all parts of the building, even below ground level. Therefore, they are not reliant on the radio system when operators are at full capacity and can still engage in communications should the need arise.
As the client required a working solution to coincide with the official building opening, this presented a challenge regarding technical radio licenses and procuring and installing the antenna combining systems on time. Considering the time constraints involved, Radiocoms suggested a phased deployment.
The designed system utilises a three site, six slot linked multi site capacity plus system using Motorola SLR5500 repeaters, antenna combining and a distributed antenna system to provide comprehensive coverage throughout the premises and surrounding areas, whilst the WAVE PTX gateway provides an interface to their MOTOTRBO radio network, creating the centralised single platform for communication.
Phase one involved the installation of the distributed antenna system and repeater network along with the Wave Gateway to create a connection between both the DMR and BBPTT technology. The first phase of the installation was completed ready for the soft opening of the building.
Phase two involved the antenna combing system and was installed ready for the official opening of the building, thus ensuring the radio network was operational to its fullest capacity and meeting the client’s deadline.
Traditional radio users were supplied with a fleet of the stylish and discreet Motorola SL2600 handsets and non-traditional users were supplied with the powerful and slim Motorola TLK100 WAVE PTX devices.
All users have multiple talk groups in which to operate and the flexibility of migrating to other talk groups without missing a call on their home group. Users also have the capability of initiating an emergency call to all users on the network at the touch of a button.
Management of the system is administered remotely via a RM server which provides an efficient route to support critical radio infrastructure adjustments, eliminating down time and the need for physical onsite access.
As with the systems deployed at their London offices, this system is fully maintained on Radiocoms’ Platinum managed service. The service covers complete on-site infrastructure and software support, preventative maintenance and regular performance reviews.
With a seamless connectivity solution, they now have the advantages of both DMR and BBPTT technology which is providing their end users with a solid communications platform and the organisation with the flexibility and scalability to support future expansion.
