Power Station selects Radiocoms

A power station in Gloucestershire is the first commercial nuclear power station in the UK to be decommissioned. Its location on the eastern bank of the UK’s River Severn Estuary was chosen because of its easy access to unlimited supplies of cooling water. It came into service in 1962 and after 27 years of successful operation - generating enough electricity on a typical day to serve an urban area the size of Bristol - the twin reactor station closed in 1989.The station is now proceeding through a measured and calculated programme of work to decommission the site. Magnox  Ltd is working on behalf of the NDA to manage and progress the work plan on site safely, efficiently and with due care for the environment.

With over 200 employees working at the power station over an area of over 27 hectares, the previous single channel analogue system was not able to provide reliable communications to all users throughout the site.  After a competitive tender, Radiocoms was selected as the preferred supplier to provide a MPT1327 trunk system. Radiocoms was selected because of its professional approach and proven track record in the design and implementation of similar systems.

Radiocoms’ engineers carried out comprehensive site surveys of the power station before commencement of installation works, to ensure the new antenna system would provide coverage at all operational areas. Based on the survey,  the antenna system was designed and installed along with a five channel MPT1327 system and over 100 Motorola hand portables. Each hand portable was individually configured to operate on the work groups required and each electronic serial number (ESN) was registered on the system.

An MPT1327 trunked radio system was selected as it was able to provide 100% coverage to all users and the system could be programmed to allow key employees priority in case of emergency.

The new radio system has greatly increased the productivity of the power station’s workers, all of whom have been delighted with the improved performance and are now confident that they are contactable at all times.
